When Johan Harmen Brender started his study in 1701 at Leiden University, he registered himself in Latin as Johannes Hermannus a Brandis, and in the same year we also find Johan Harmen van Brandis. Later he called himself Brender à Brandis, and everyone with that name is descended from him.
What did he mean? He was born in The Hague. It could mean the family came from Brandis, there is a Brandis in Switzerland and another one near Leipzig in Germany. Or maybe 'Brender from the brandae' was meant, pointing to the torches (Old German: 'ein Brand' = a burning stick to light a fire with) in the coat of arms, or 'from the moors', also 'brandae' in mediaeval Latin. Anyway, his father's brother Philips Jacob was registered at his marriage as coming from Wiederstein. There is a Wiederstein or Widderstein in the former German county of Sayn-Altenkirchen (west of Nassau), and I have found that was the place Ernestus's sons came from (Sayn page) to serve as officers in the Netherlands. There was a Brender family in Widderstein, some members later even called themselves "Brender von Widderstein". The coat of arms of Widderstein was a ram, German "Widder", and in the family's coat of arms we find back that ram.
This German Brender family was closely linked to the Counts of Sayn and they served that family as stewards, sheriffs etc.; Widderstein was a fief, originally granted by the counts of Sayn to (as they called themselves after that) the knights of Widderstein. When the last of them died in 1513, it was first taken over by steward (rentmeester) Heinrich Brender but soon after that by the Holdinghausen family. When a female descendant married Jacob Brender, who died in 1668, there were again Brenders living in Widderstein.

       Gerrit

V.7    Gerrit BRENDER à BRANDIS, ~ Leiden 21 Mar 1751, † Amsterdam 23 Jun 1802.
One of the three brothers Christoffel, Gerhard Jellis and Coenraad must have been his father. He was baptized as "Gerrit Nober" son of "Gerrit Nober" and Maria de VINK. Maria de Vink accompanied him when he married, and from her he inherited a house in Leiden, which she had herself inherited from her mother Abigaël Boekhoven's aunt, also called Abigaël Boekhoven.
Formerly it was thought that Maria's father was Hendrik, and that Gerrit's name was an indication that Gerhard J. must be his father. But in an article in "Liber amicorum jhr. mr. C.C. van Valkenburg", published in 1985, proof is given that Maria de Vink's parents were Gerrit de Vink and Abigaël Boekhoven, so she called her son after her father, and Gerrit's father can have been any of the three brothers. Christoffel had already had an illegimate child with another woman!
Gerrit must have been at some good private school, but for 23 years there is no trace of him, and then he married and called himself "Gerrit Brender à Brandis", and Christoffel, who was then bailiff of Rijnland, did not protest.
Gerrit Brender à Brandis went to Amsterdam and was very active and influential in the cultural and political life there, writer, lector of Felix Meritis and other litterary societies, publisher of many articles and books, secretary of Amsterdam and of the (Bataafsche) Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen. Pedro Emilio Brender à Brandis
As a child, Pedro Emilio BRENDER à BRANDIS, born 1851, must have heard numerous stories from his parents Gerard Abraham and H.V.J. Elisabeth about their wonderful time in tropical Brazil. Gerard loved to call himself 𝙂𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘥𝘰 and his wife 𝙄𝘴𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢, and had called Pedro Emilio after his brother-in-law Pieter von Söhsten and his Brazilian wife Emilia.
When Pedro was 18 years old, he decided to go for a tropical adventure himself and engaged himself for six years as a soldier in the Dutch Indies. But I think he wasn't really fit for a military career. After a year in Sumatra he became a corporal, but a year later was returned tot the rank of soldier. In 1874 he became "soldier writer" but lost that function again when he was accused of "destruction of papers" and "insubordination through words", for which they sent him to prison for a month in 1877. He fought in Aceh (Atjeh) against the 'rebels' there but got in trouble again in 1880 when he was accused of theft and was put in prison, for three months this time. Probably we'll never know what really happened, possibly he was just trying to help a friend, destroying and taking away papers .... In 1882 he was finally discharged from the army. He started a new life in South Africa, where the First Boer War had just ended, the Boers had won and probably Pedro went to the Orange Free State, because he married seven years younger Hester van NIEKERK, born in Bloemfontein, its capital. They had their first daughter, called after his mother, in 1894 and their last son in 1904. Unfortunately his daughter Gertruda Isabella, called after his sister, died. I don't think this sister's daughter Gertruda Isabella, my grandmother, who has lived in South Africa until 1928, knew anything about her uncle who died in Natal in 1928.
